When Was the Last Time You Gave Your Full Attention to Just One Task?
Why Multitasking Is Overrated and How to Reclaim Your Focus
An Argument for Single-Tasking
Multitasking feels productive. We’ve all been there… Juggling a video call, responding to emails, and mentally drafting a presentation all at once.
Even as I write this, I find myself debating whether to start a load of laundry “maximize” my time. But research shows that shifting between tasks can reduce productivity by up to 40%.
What feels like an accomplishment is often a recipe for burnout and overlooked details. Single-tasking, on the other hand, allows for deeper focus and higher-quality work.
Think of single-tasking as a productivity detox. It simplifies your mental load, increases clarity and focus, and can help you achieve better results.
Let’s explore a few strategies to get started.
Practical Strategies to Start Single-Tasking
Prioritize with a To-Do List: Choose 1-3 essential tasks to complete each day.
Time Block Your Calendar: Dedicate specific chunks of time to individual tasks. Start small by defining a single time block to test.
Minimize Distractions: Silence notifications and set your environment for focus.
Use the Pomodoro Technique: Work for 25 minutes on a task, then take a 5-minute break. While the traditional Pomodoro doesn’t always work for me, I’ve found that setting a timer makes a huge difference and helps me maintain focus.
Take Action Challenge
Today, pick one important task and dedicate 30 minutes of undivided attention to it. Notice how it feels to focus without interruption. Then, take a moment to reflect. How did single-tasking make you feel? How would you rate the quality of your work?
